Recurring Dream

When I was very young, I used to have this recurring dream.  I was home alone and there was a stranger outside.  The stranger was very bad and coming towards the door.  He was wearing black leather gloves and reaching for the doorknob to get into the house.  I was on the other side of the door and racing to lock the door before the stranger could enter the house.  I never knew if I would make it or not because I always woke up before the dream could continue.  It always ended with his hand in the black leather glove almost reaching the knob and me about to lock the door.  The dream drove me crazy as I used to have it several times a week until I was 10 or so.  I still would have it sometimes but the dream became less frequent as I got older.  Then when I was in my early twenties, I was housesitting for my friends family.  I was in the kitchen putting away the food I just ate for dinner when I heard a car door.  Immediately I got the same feeling that I used to have in that recurring dream I always had.  It was a feeling of terror mixed with adrenaline and urgency.  I thought quickly that this was silly but couldn’t shake the feeling.    I glanced at the front door, it was unlocked!  I started towards it quickly to lock the door even though there was no indication that there was any trouble at all.  I kept seeing in my head that black leather gloved hand reaching for the knob and it made me panic and rush faster to the door.  I made it to the door and turned the lock.  I was relieved but felt sort of silly at the same time.  It wasn’t more than a couple of seconds and the doorknob turned!  Someone actually tried to get in!  I was so scared that I just ran into the bedroom and stayed there.  I didn’t even peek out to see because I was so afraid of what I might see.  About 10 minutes later I heard the car door again and figured the person was gone.  I beleive that dream saved me.  If I didn’t have the dream I may not have even bothered locking the door, or even if I had I wouldn’t have rushed to the door and would have been to late.  I sometimes wish I looked out the peephole or through a window, but I know that if I had, I would have seen a stranger wearing black leather gloves…
